On the oscillations of elastic structures: Modelling and mathematical analysis
In this lecture we will discuss two mathematical models describing vibrations of elastic structures. In the first model we will consider the rain-wind induced oscillations of a cable of a cable-stayed bridge. In the second model we will study the transversal vibrations of an elevator cable. Both models will be discussed in detail, and it will be shown how elementary and advanced mathematical methods in the field of (ordinary and partial) differential equations and in the field of difference equations can be used to compute resonances and autoresonances in the elastic structures.

Dynamic Optical Response of Metal Nano Particle – Semiconductor Quantum Dot Hybrid
The optical response of a nano heterodimer comprising a semiconductor quantum dot (SQD) and a metallic nanoparticle (MNP) has been found to produce a nonlinear coupling between the dipole moment of the SQD and the surface plasmon field of the MNP. This nonlinear interaction gives rise to a characteristics S-shaped variation of SQD population difference versus the input light intensity that shows bistability behavior of the system.
